A Fun Place to Visit

Flowers, flowers everywhere!  Naturally there would be lots of flowers in a greenhouse, but at Schmaltz’ greenhouse they are every direction-pots on the floor, hanging baskets, and rows and rows of every color flower you can imagine-even black.

And outside Mike added a decoratie wall, fish pond, waterfall and tulips.

For 2011 Mike has added lawn ornaments, benches,  tomatoes, pepper plants and 5 new petunias with names like Pinstripe, Phantom, and Black Velvet.

Worth the Hard Work

Mike Schmaltz is spearheading planting trees in Anamoose.  The city council, of which Mike is a member, has set up a 4 year plan.  This year 20-25 trees will be planted for a cost of $1500-$1600.  So far, Mike; his daughter Tiffany; Britany Schmaltz; & Torie Dosch have planted 4 trees in the park, 2 at the fire hall, & 6 at the south entrance into Anamoose.  They are planting 3 different species of linden, 3 different species of maples and also some birch trees.  The trees average 40-60 feet tall.

Pictured are: 1.  Britany Schmaltz (left), Tiffany Schmaltz (center) & Mike Schmaltz   2.  Measuring for trees.

Trapper, Mike’s dog, was having a great time running through the water while they worked.

Some local residents have removed dead elm trees infected with Dutch Elm Disease.

Woman’s Day Out

No, we weren’t shopping!  Five of us from Anamoose were in Bismarck yesterday at the final Horizon’s annual get together.  Anamoose, along with some representatives of the other 45 North Dakota  communities, were involved with the Horizons program that was run by the NDSU staff of Fargo.  We did an 18 month leadership program from 2006-2008 where we did study circles and Leadership Plenty classes.

Since then we have been able to attend many free meetings plus get our transportation free.  As of June this program will be done.  But Anamoose will continue on with the projects we have started and figure out what else we need to do.

On Thursday, May 26th at the Senior Center we will hold a STRATEGIC PLANNING MEETING where we will discuss what we need to do to keep Anamoose thriving.  We want to see a large representation from Anamoose, so plan to come.  We will start with a lunch at 6pm.

Pictured are:  Shirley Nitz, Janice Buchholz, Alyce Heer, Phyllis Zimmerman, and Mardell Helm.

Generous Anamoose High School Grad

Hats off to Jackie Browning Creed.  She is our largest contributor to our Anamoose Area Community Foundation so far this year.  Jackie graduated from Anamoose High School in 1955 and from Trinity School of Nursing in 1958.  She and Herb live in Chehalis, WA.

This generous contribution has certainly helped us get closer to our $10,000 goal for 2011.

Change is Good

A large crowd gathered at the Anamoose Senior Center Monday evening for a question and answer session about the new water system.  Since February we are receiving our water from the North Central Rural Water Consortium.  The consortium now owns our water tower, and complete system.

The minimum monthly bill is $52 with the water usage rate at $5.30 per thousand gallons.  The average family will be paying about $65 a month.  We soon will be getting new meters that will allow the consortium to radio read our water meters.

Some water users have noticed an odor and taste to the new water.  We were told at the meeting this is due to a lubricant (similar to vegetable oil) that is used to put the PVC pipes together.  This should be gone soon.

Water that we previously used from wells near Anamoose was high in arsenic and required many chemicals to bring it to an acceptable level.  At the meeting we were given a listing of what is in our water now.  This water is softer and considerably lower in sodium.  One big positive is that we don’t have scum on top of our coffee now!

Over the Hill a Ways

The 50th birthday is when you are considered “over the hill”, but Mary Dockter at 88 (89 in November) is WAY over the hill! She is the oldest woman in Anamoose.   Mary was born in White Township, Pierce County on the farm presently owned by her brother, Walter Doubek.  After marrying David Dockter in 1940 she lived north of Anamoose and in 1964 they moved to a farm south of Anamoose.  Mary moved in to Anamoose in 1987 after David died the previous year.

Mary is a busy woman for her age!  She sews quilts and collects owls.  She has over 1000 owls!  (Pictured is her largest and favorite owl)  Her kids still bring her owls and yet she has few duplicates.

The quilt to the left is made of old neckties.  The  quilt below she calls her tab quilt as she has sewn tabs and buttons on all the jean squares.  The white square that says “Fire Department” and “Frank” came from a Fire Dept. coveralls that her brother Frank Doubek wore.  Frank died just a few weeks ago at the age of 85.  At present Mary is making cute little children’s farmer’s caps.  Mary still drives and enjoys visiting with friends at the cafe.  She is a member of the Anamoose Senior Center.

St. Pat’s Social

The Anamoose Senior Center held a St. Patrick’s Day social.  It started with a pot luck meal followed by the playing of dominos and cards.  I and my partners lost big time!  Pictured is Esther Weigelt with the St. Patrick’s cake she brought.

Oldie, But Goodie

We have many senior citizens in Anamoose, but David Gienger is our oldest.  David will be 90 on May 26th, but definitely doesn’t portray a man of that age.  He has lived in the Anamoose area all his life.  He was born 10 miles north of Anamoose.  In the 40’s he moved 4 miles east of Anamoose.  He moved into town when he and his brother Chris quit farming .   Since then he has been working for other farmers.  At present he still works for the Bartz farm.  Guess he doesn’t know that the retirement age is 65.

In 1939-40 David worked in a CCC camp at Foxholm, ND. and  learned woodworking.  Since then he has been making wood items such as shelves, picture frames, little nic-nacs, storage units, and tables.  Pictured are a kleenex holder, curling iron, and bathroom mirror.

For 54 years David was score keeper at the Anamoose basketball games.  He and his wife Deloris live just a block from the school.  He was also Sec/Treas for the Anamoose Fire Dept. for 15 years.

Forward to July

I just came home from the Senior Center where we stuffed envelopes for the July 1-3 Anamoose School Reunion.  There were 30 volunteers helping fold, stuff, stamp & label envelopes.  We had 7 inserts for the 1100 alumni envelopes.  There were 100 teacher mailings which included an extra invitation page informing them of a teacher tribute on Friday, July 1st.  And finally there were 350 letters that go out to advertisers for a total of 1550 envelopes to mail out on Monday.  All this work was accomplished in 1 1/2 hours.

Bonnie Helm is the chairman of the AASR.  She has been having meetings twice a month.  The meetings I have attended have been very well organized with good input from those attending.  The next meeting is at 7PM, Tuesday, March 22nd at the Senior Center.
